Getting Connected in Your Room
All residence rooms have hard-wired internet access. The following information will help you purchase the hardware you will need to connect to the New College Network. You will receive more detailed information about the New College Residence Network and configuring your system when you move in to Residence.
In order to connect to the New College Network you will require an installed ethernet card. This card should:
- be compatible with your computer
- be compatible with your operating system (have the necessary drivers)
- be compatible with a 100/10 BASE-T network have an RJ-45 connection port
In order to connect your computer to the network port you will require an ethernet cable. This cable should:
- be a twisted pair cable with RJ-45 connectors
- be a straight-through cable and not a cross-over cable
- be long enough to reach from your computer to the network port
PLEASE NOTE: The length of cable required varies from room to room, from 2ft to a possible 30ft. We suggest that you purchase the cable after move-in day. Ethernet cables are available for purchas for $5 from the Wilson Lodge, and the residence is also located in close proximity to a number of computer stores that sell everthing that you will need.
Creating a University of Toronto E-mail Account
All ResNet users require a University of Toronto (UTORmail) e-mail account; or if you are an APSC student an “ECF” account which will be assigned to you by your faculty. All U of T communication including crucial residence information such as deadlines, fees updates, events and services will all come to your utoronto.ca account. It is not only important but imperative that you check your UTORmail regularly throughout the year. A UTORmail account can be created as soon as you have accquired your T-card.

ResNet Services / Connectivity Issues in Residence
If you encounter any issues with the internet in your residence room, a ticketing system is available through the Wilson lodge to access IT services. You may go to the lodge and provide you rname and room number in order for student IT staff to attend to your issue, within business hours. It is also possible to submit your ‘ticket’ or internet service request on-line directly through: https://fixit.newres.utoronto.ca.
In addition, there is a ResNet Representative in each House who is an elected member of House Council, whose position is to assist students with connectivity issues in their rooms. Students should become familiar with their ResNet Reps and House Councils and know who to ask for help in their House should any internet issues arise. If students have questions, they can always ask their Don to point them in the right direction.
Copyright Infringement
Our internet usage policy strictly prohibits students from downloading copyrighted material. The policy is outlined in the Residence Occupancy Agreement under ‘Schedule “C” – New College Network Usage Agreement.’ (provide link)
If a student violates this agreement they will be locked out of their internet access for a period of time. If they continue to violate the agreement, they may be prevented from accessing the internet indefinitely.
