The Computer Literacy tutoring Program is run collaboratively between SLL, Common Ground and Frontier College’s Independent Studies Program. We are looking for enthusiastic New College students who are interested in working one-to-one with adult learners to help them improve their literacy skills and achieve their personal goals. Volunteers must be able to commit to two hours of class time per week, with up to an hour’s time outside of class to prepare any additional resources to better meet their student’s needs. Classes will be held at New College and will run from mid-Sept until 31 March 2011.
Frontier College delivers student-centered curriculum, covering subjects such as: reading and writing; numeracy; computer literacy; research and presentation skills; math; time and money management; and social skills.
Tutors receive training and professional development opportunities to further enrich their experience working with the program. They have also found that they gain:
- Increased patience and organizational skills
- Improved computer, internet and Microsoft Office skills
- Improved communication and teaching skills
- Invaluable experiences from interacting with and sharing knowledge with the students and other tutors
Recruitment of tutors takes place between July and September. For more information, email us at new.studentlife@utoronto.ca.
