The New College Mentorship Program matches high school students who have either won or applied for one of Andra Takacs or Beland Honderich Award Programs or is a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto high school student who has expressed an interest in a post-secondary preparedness mentorship experience with New College Students. Mentors are screened and trained by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto, and match support will be provided from their organization as well. From October 2010-March 2011, mentors and mentees will meet on campus six times throughout the program and will be able to attend events organized through the University of Toronto, with a focus on higher learning and university life. Mentors are primarily considered to be guides and friends, and are not responsible for tutoring or providing counselling to mentees.
Benefits of the program include the development of a great friendship and a chance to learn more about the university experience and to get acquainted with the U of T campus, academic programs and extra-curricular activities. Our program coordinates a variety of events to encourage the pursuit of post-secondary learning and to strengthen the friendship between mentors and mentees. Therefore, there will be a good balance between academic interests and fun-filled activities!
Recruitment of volunteers takes place between July and September. For more information, email new.studentlife@utoronto.ca.
