Please join us for the NEW Pedagogy Lunch Series!
The NEW Pedagogy Lunch Series provides an opportunity for instructors, TAs and other interested New College members to come together to network and reflect on our pedagogical practices. Our first meeting will be “Working against Academic Ableism: A Workshop” by Professor Jay Dolmage (Waterloo) .
When: Friday, October 19, 2018, 12 – 2 PM
Where: Room 2007D Wilson Hall, 40 Willcocks Street
Who: Anyone interested in pedagogical practices
What We’ll Do: In this workshop, we will collaborate to address the ableist attitudes, policies and practices built into higher education. We will also interrogate the minimal and temporary means we have been given to address inequities, and the cost such an approach has for disabled students and faculty. Finally, we will explore our own ableist biases, apologies and defenses in an effort to build tools for anti-ableist education.
What to Bring: If you are comfortable sharing, please bring examples of “accommodations” that you may have asked for yourself, or made available to students, so that we can discuss what was effective about them, what may have limited or short-circuited their effectiveness and how we could make them more effective.
A light lunch will be provided. Space is limited; to register for the lunch, please contact Anne McGuire by Tuesday, October 16, 2018.
Access Note: The workshop is currently scheduled to take place in room 2007D, Wilson Hall. The room is designated as wheelchair accessible, but the entryway is somewhat narrow and there is a bit of a sharp turn to get in. If you have any access questions or needs, please be in touch and we will work to ensure the workshop and venue are accessible for everyone wishing to attend.
