On March 6, 2017, the United States Government issued an executive order temporarily banning travel to the US from six Muslim-majority countries.
New College has a historic commitment to education for social justice, conceived dynamically to reflect shifting historical conditions. Our academic programs exemplify socially responsive and engaged fields of scholarship and foster diversity, equity and global awareness for all students, faculty, staff, colleagues, alumni and community partners. In addition, we value the free flow of people and ideas, as expressed in the University of Toronto’s statement on the ban. We honour the vital contributions of students and scholars from the affected countries to our academic goals and deplore the suffering this ban has caused to refugees and others. Consequently, we unequivocally denounce this executive order that goes counter to the values that underpin the foundations of our mission as a post-secondary institution.
As noted by the University in its statement:
- “Students travelling abroad with concerns should call the Safety Abroad Office directly 416-946-3929; in the case of an emergency, reach us at the 24-hour collect emergency line via Campus Police at 416-978-2222.
- International students on all three U of T campuses who have concerns or questions can reach staff at the Centre for International Experience at 416-978-2564 or email email@example.com.”
