Over the past few months, the Office of Residence and Student Life (ORSL) has undergone several staffing changes. As we all do our best to stay connected while many of us continue to work remotely, we wanted to take a moment to introduce our new team members, while also announcing the departure of another.
In June, ORSL welcomed Jared Boland to our team as the new Student Life Programs Coordinator.
It has been an exciting time with Jared joining us; notably, Jared coordinates our SPROUT Mentorship program, IGNITE Academic Success program and the day-to-day coordination of the Student Centre among other areas in the Student Life portfolio. We are excited to have Jared’s voice to the table, as we continue to navigate supporting students fully, especially during this challenging and unusual time.
Jared joined us having undertaken internship and assistant roles with UofT’s Student and Campus Community Development team and OISE’s MT Program. Prior to that, Jared worked at Western University in Residence Life as a programming coordinator which included coordinating multiple orientation programs and advising residence councils.
Kevin Nitiema joins ORSL as a Residence Life Coordinator for Overflow Housing Operations and will be on contract through February 2021. Kevin is a recent graduate from the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design and lived in residence at New College during his entire undergraduate career. His previous leadership experiences include a successful and term as Building President for Wilson Hall with New College Residence Council and three years as a Residence Don and Lead Don. Kevin will work closely with Dirk Rodricks, Assistant to the Dean for Residence Life and Nikki Butler, Assistant to the Dean for Administration.
We are also excited to share that Alexandra Sabzparvar has re-joined the ORSL team to provide interim coverage of the Programs and Communications Assistant role. Alex has worked with our office for 2 years, notably as our Residence and Student Life Intern this summer where she coordinated the E-Mentorship component of SPROUT in addition to being instrumental in all elements of our movement to fully communicating and engaging with our students in a virtual space. Alex started on Monday, October 5 and will remain with ORSL into December. Alex will be temporarily taking over the role previously held by Jerusha Retnakanthan.
It is with mixed emotions that we share that Jerusha has accepted a new role of Marketing and Communications Officer at Rotman Commerce. This is an exciting opportunity for her; one in which she will coordinate all promotional material, implement process improvements for all content generation, and implement a digital media plan for a division of 3000+ students.
Since Jerusha joined the ORSL team 2 years ago, she has consistently found ways to make significant contributions to our community of students. She has played an integral role in the evolution of the visual identity of Residence and Student Life at New through her creativity and her commitment to meaningful relationships. Notably, this has come in the forms of leading the re-branding for key functional areas (Student Life, Residence Life, Orientation and the First Year Experience), re-conceptualizing and spearheading all of our social media strategy and engagement, sourcing and on-boarding a brand new Student Engagement platform, and helping tell the story of our team’s programming through assessment analysis and reporting. Jerusha’s last day at NEW was October 9, 2020.
