Dr. Kathleen M. O’Connell

New College solicits nominations for the inaugural Kathleen O’Connell Teaching Excellence Award. This award recognizes the outstanding teaching of our sessional instructors.
We invite students, faculty, sessional lecturers and teaching assistants to nominate sessional lecturers and writing instructors teaching under the CUPE3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.

We are proud to name the award in honor of Dr. Kathleen M. O’Connell, a scholar of comparative literature and modern Bengali culture, who has offered courses on Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray at New College since 1993. Dr. O’Connell’s involvement with Bengali language and culture, Tagore and Santiniketan goes back to her M.A. in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University (India) in the mid-1960s, which was followed by a PhD in South Asian Studies from the University of Toronto. Her writings on Tagore have been included in journals, encyclopaedias, as book-chapters and in conference volumes. A short bibliography includes: Rabindranath Tagore: The Poet as Educator. Second edition. Kolkata: Visva-Bharati. 2002, 2011; Bravo Professor Shonku. Translation (Bengali to English) of three stories by Satyajit Ray. New Delhi: Rupa & Co., 1985; ‘Rabindranath Tagore: Facets of a Cultural Icon’ issue, University of Toronto Quarterly. Edited by Kathleen and Joseph O’Connell. Vol. 77, Number 4, Fall 2008; Rabindranth Tagore:Claiming a Cultural Icon. Edited by Kathleen and Joseph O’Connell. Kolkata:Visva-Bharati, 2009.

Kathleen’s teaching inspires us with its commitment to socially engaged learning and scholarship, a commitment that lies at the heart of our academic mission at New College. Her work also continues to inspire students as was evident earlier this year when the Bengali Students Association invited her to speak at their screening of Ray’s documentary film Rabindranath Tagore. In this award in her honor we continue this legacy by honoring the teaching of sessional lecturers and writing instructors and their important contributions to our students and programs.
