Hey there!

Uhm… I need your help. Do you remember my first blog post? No? Okay stop what you’re doing and read this. Don’t worry I’ll wait.

Welcome back! Where was I? Oh right, do you remember that part in my first blog post about “highlighting the stories of New College” and giving everyone the chance to be comforted by each other’s stories? Well, the time has come. I know that many of you have experiences that you would love to share. Your stories may be full of joy, despair, hope, and maybe even confusion; I know in some way these have impacted your life and have the potential to impact others. It’s always bothered me that some stories are left untold, especially if they have the power to move people somehow. I want to give New College students the chance to hear and tell our stories. We all have some stories in our back pocket, so I invite you to participate in a new series I’m starting.

“But how can we get involved, Chelsy?”

I’m glad you asked and I’m so excited to tell you!

Alright, here we go!

I know my position is a Student Blogger for The NEW and my job is to write articles such as this one, but I’m very ambitious, so I’m tackling a project that’ll take place on IGTV. You read that right! I’m a vlogger now. Actually, not really. I’ll just be hosting the series – introducing you, hyping you up, and helping you tell your story – but YOU are the star. Your role in this project is the most important because it’s your story I want to showcase. And for you busy students out there, I know how much reading you have to do for classes, so I got your back. You can relax and just sit back as you watch or listen to these stories when they come out. It’s great to take a break from reading and I want you to thoroughly enjoy the experience of hearing a story again, just like when we were kids.

Don’t you miss this? *tear falls down my cheek*

If you are interested in telling your story, here’s what I have in mind. You get to choose how this goes: you’ll have the option of sending me a video, or audio of you sharing your experience, or you can send me a written copy of the story and I’ll read it out loud for the community to hear. You can stay anonymous, have an alias, or use your real name. We will try our best to accommodate your needs because the goal is to finally have your story heard. Like I said, YOU are the star in this production.

There are themes that I’d like to cover in this series. I hope this list will encourage you and give you an idea of how you want to communicate with the New College community. If you feel that there are themes that aren’t on the list but should be, please leave them in the comments. I’d love to hear your feedback!

Here’s What I’m Looking For:

  • Success with U of T / New College Resources
  • Growth and Progress
  • Social Justice
  • Empowerment
  • New College Club/Group Stories
  • Love (e.g., romantic, family, self-love) → I’m hoping to have these stories out in February
  • Health and Wellness (i.e. Mental Health, Physical Health, Lifestyle etc.)
  • Appreciation Stories (e.g. for a Professor, New College Staff, friend)
  • Fun New College memories that have changed or affected your life in some way
  • Anything that you feel will positively impact the New College community

I hope you’re just as excited about this idea as I am. I plan on working on this project until my very last day in this position, so don’t worry – if you’re not ready to share a story right now, you’ll have time. A willingness and excitement to share and listen is the main thing I need your help with, but there are some little things you could do that I would really appreciate.

First, follow @newcollegetoronto on Instagram because that’s where this series will take place and that’s where I’ll be giving you updates.

Second, spread the word about this and get people as excited as you are to hear and share some stories. During times like this, when our day-to-day is pretty much the same, it’s nice to look back on our past and reminisce, which can also help foster a sense of hope for the future.

And finally, I’d love some help coming up with a name for this thing. I have some ideas, but I really want this project to be built with a strong community-based foundation, so if you have some ideas for what to call this series, I’d love to read them in the comments. How awesome would it be to name an official video series of New College?! Imagine the bragging rights!

If you have any questions about anything, I’ll be waiting in the comments.

Hope to hear your story soon, but for now I’ll say–

To be continued…
