Residence Rooms

New College offers three different room options for residents: single rooms, double rooms, and economy double rooms. Single and double rooms are available in Wilson Hall, Wetmore Hall, and 45 Willcocks. Economy rooms are only available in Wilson Hall. All rooms have windows and air-conditioning/heating.

Economy double rooms maximize space by placing the beds over the desks, or by using one bed-over-desk, and one regular height bed and separate desk. The bed-over-desk is set up like a traditional bunk bed, except the lower bunk is removed to make room for the desk.

Single Room

Houses an individual first year or upper year student. All single rooms include:

  • single bed and mattress (no bedding)
  • desk
  • desk chair
  • closet
  • bulletin board
  • curtains or blinds
  • waste and recycling bins
  • internet connection
Double Room

Houses two first year or upper year students. All double rooms include:

  • two single beds and mattresses (no bedding)
  • two desks
  • two desk chairs
  • two closets
  • bulletin board
  • curtains or blinds
  • waste and recycling bins
  • internet connection
Economy Double Room

Houses two first year or upper year students. These rooms include:

  • either two bed-over-desks with single mattresses (no bedding), or one bed-over-desk and one standard/regular height bed both with single mattresses (no bedding) and a desk
  • two desks
  • two desk chairs
  • two closets
  • bulletin board
  • curtains or blinds
  • waste and recycling bins
  • internet connection

Residence Facilities

Washrooms

Each residence floor has 2 to 3 shared washrooms. Washrooms have multiple shower and toilet stalls, so there is no waiting. Individual showers and toilet stalls are private and can be locked.

Gender-inclusive floors have gender-inclusive washrooms, while single gender floors have single gender washrooms. New College residence does not have ensuite or private bathrooms.

Laundry Facilities and Cleaning

Each New College building has complimentary laundry facilities with dryers and washing machines.

Caretaking staff clean the common areas, such as the washrooms and common rooms, on a daily basis. Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms—cleaning supplies are provided on each floor.

Internet

Full wireless internet access is available on all residence floors in all three buildings. Access is also available in the public areas of New College, including the Wilson and Wetmore Lounges and the D.G. Ivey Library in Wilson Hall. Common Rooms and Kitchens

Every residence floor has common rooms. Each common room has a living room (with a sofa, chairs, and a TV), a kitchen (with a refrigerator, microwave, and stove), and a small eating area.


Residence Communities

At New College, residence rooms are located on secured residence floors in Wilson Hall, Wetmore Hall and 45 Willcocks. New College’s residence floors are divided into 20 “houses” of 40-50 students.

Residence Dons

Each residence house has a Residence Don who is either an upper-year undergraduate or graduate student. More information about Residence Dons can be found here (Hyperlinked).

Gender-Inclusive & Single-Gender Communities

Gender-Inclusive Communities

New College’s gender‐inclusive communities are located in all three of our buildings. They bring together first‐year and upper‐year students from all programs and areas of interest. These floors have gender‐inclusive washrooms with individually lockable showers and toilet stalls.

Men-Identifying & Women-Identifying Communities

These communities bring together first‐year and upper‐year students from all programs and areas of interest in an exclusively single‐gender environment. The men-identifying floor is located in 45 Willcocks and the women-identifying floors are located in Wilson and Wetmore Hall.

Living Learning Communities

What is a Living Learning Community (LLC)?

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are residential houses that bring together like-minded students to engage in a specific educational focus outside of the classroom. By applying to an LLC, you are committing to the values and ideals of that community. Residents in an LLC will be encouraged to engage with the community’s events and discussions, drawing connections to the wider New College and University of Toronto Culture, as well as life beyond.

Life (+) Sciences

Located in Wilson Hall, our Life (+) Sciences LLC brings together students in Life Sciences programs, or those who have an interest in life sciences, health, or becoming a healthcare professional. This residence community strives for balance where residents are not only able to engage with college life, but also gain academic and social support tailored for students studying or interested in Life Sciences. This community is supported by a specifically selected LLC Residence Don with an academic background in either Life Science or Healthcare studies, and features programming tailored to the needs of Life Science students.

Activities you’ll experience in this LLC include:

  • Study Sessions with Midterm Tips from the Learning Strategist
  • Trip to the U of T Indigenous Medicine Garden
  • Trip with Faculty to the Ontario Science Centre or U of T Greenhouses

Sustainability, Access & Equity (SAE)

Located in 45 Willcocks, the Sustainability, Access, and Equity (SAE) Learning Community members will have the opportunity to be a part of a truly unique community and engage in thought provoking programming opportunities. This community is designed for students who are interested in issues of equity as it relates to social identities such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, socioeconomic class, national origin, education, citizenship, (dis)ability, etc. and who wish to develop their knowledge of these issues within a broader perspective of justice, sustainability, and community development. Programming in this community promotes participation in the New College Community and the wider University and Toronto communities and practical experiences in a variety of settings.

  • Guided tour at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) – Women and Art

Innovation & Technology (iTech)

Located in Wetmore Hall, the Innovation & Technology (iTECH) Learning Community brings together those first-year and upper-year students committed to innovation and technology in their academic programs. This LLC is designed to attract those students who simply have a passion for technological innovation. This community is supported by a specially selected residence don with such a background, and who understand the pressures associated with a degree in the STEM fields. 

Activities you’ll experience in this LLC include:

  • Indigenous Histories of Toronto Teaching
  • Tour of the SciNet Supercomputer @ U of T
  • Study Session with Midterm Tips from the Learning Strategist
  • Coffee with a Prof
  • Career Development workshop with the New College Career Educator

Security

Residence floors are individually secured and can only be accessed using residence key-fobs. After 10pm, the residence buildings are locked and can only be accessed using residence key-fobs.

Smoking

New College is a smoke-free environment. This means that smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the buildings, including individual student rooms.
