NEW is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Tara Goldstein as Vice Principal of New College for a three year term (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2023). Dr. Goldstein has long been a member of the NEW community, having taught a course on Equity, Activism and Education in the Equity Studies program for 7 years. She is excited to take on the role of Vice-Principal and is very much looking forward to working with everyone.

Dr. Goldstein has significant academic administrative experience in many roles, including Academic Director of the Centre for Urban Schooling at OISE (2014-2016) and Chair of the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (2008-2010). She is currently serving as Co-President of Queer Studies in Education and Culture, Canadian Studies in Education (with Dr. Lee Airton from Queen’s University), and has served as Chair of the Women’s Caucus of the Playwrights Guild of Canada.
Her research on such topics as parental experiences of gender and sexual diversity in schools, LGBTQ families’ experiences in Ontario schools, transnational adoption and LGBTQ families and language choice for academic success in multilingual high schools has been funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project Grant, SSHRC, the Canadian Council of the Arts, Pride Toronto, and the Community One Foundation. She is the solo author of 6 books, 1 edited book, and 3 literary fiction books, 55 book chapters and articles, and 4 published playscripts.
She has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Toronto True Blue Award for excellence in Ph.D. supervision, the Carol Crealock Award for feminist scholarship and academic mentorship, the American Educational Research Association Queer Activist Scholarship Award, OISE/UT Teacher of the Year, the David E. Hunt Award for excellence in graduate teaching, and the University of Toronto Excellence Award in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
