New College was delighted to learn that one of the college’s longtime employees, and someone who played a significant role in the history of the college recently celebrated a milestone birthday. We would like to send our warmest birthday wishes to Mrs. Audrey Hines, who turned 100 on April 1, 2021. Mrs. Hines was hired by Don Ivey in 1969 as the Dean of Women, and she worked in that position for close to 20 years, until her retirement in 1987.

New College’s dining hall, the Audrey Taylor Dining Hall, is named after Audrey Hines (formerly Audrey Taylor). As well, the Audrey Taylor Award was established in 1988 by the New College Student Council. The award goes to a New College student entering their second, third, or fourth year, who exemplifies the spirit and dedication with which Mrs. Hines served the New College community.

The college has enjoyed seeing Mrs. Hines regularly through the years since her retirement at events such as the Graduation Awards receptions and Spring Reunions. She also attended Principal McElhinny’s installation in the fall of 2017.

While we were not able to celebrate Mrs. Hines birthday in-person, New College’s Associate Director of Advancement spoke to her on the phone to convey the college’s best wishes for her milestone celebration.
