Event Description

“ARCHEMY” AT THE INTERFACE OF ART AND SCIENCE: A talk and interdisciplinary workshop by Daniel J Jay

We are thrilled to welcome Daniel J. Jay to the NewOne program on Thursday, September 12 at the William Doo Auditorium from 2:30 - 4 PM for a talk and interdisciplinary workshop - Archemy: Gunpowder Workshop.

Join us as he discusses his efforts to bring art and science together (Art+ Chemistry or "Archemy"), provides examples from his art practice and explores the future of Sci-Art as an interdisciplinary tool.

Archemy: Gunpowder Workshop

Our world is facing a gun violence pandemic, especially in the US, though its tragedy can be felt everywhere. In response to mass shootings in the 2010s, Dan Jay used the components of gunpowder, charcoal (black), sulfur (yellow) and potassium nitrate (white beads) to make artworks: when mixed together, these elements are explosive but are kept separate by being encased in resin. Some artworks overlay scenes of violence from current events or from art history with abstract elements that obscure the horrific images underneath. Others combine words, poetry, and evocative names (such as Columbine or Sandy Hook) with abstract imagery.

In this workshop, participants will be provided a kit containing charcoal, sulfur and potassium nitrate mixed with liquid acrylic, brushes, and paper. They will use these components of gunpowder to create art while critically reflecting on gun violence and police brutality in today's society.

Meet Daniel J. Jay

Dan J. Jay is a Professor of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology at Tufts University focused on cancer biology and was until recently the Dean of its Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He is also adjunct professor of Drawing and Painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) where he teaches a course on How the Brain Perceives Art dedicated to his past mentor David Hubel. In recent years, he has combined art and science with a unique perspective of a scientist’s mind and an artist’s eye.  Dan develops new art media from scientific materials such as liquid nitrogen, magnetic fields and elements of the Periodic Table to express inspiration in his science from childhood to the present day.  Dan has shown this work widely including Harvard University, Massachusetts State House, Boston Convention Center, Aidekman Arts center (Slater Concourse), the French Cultural Center, Whitehorse Cultural Center (Yukon), the Danforth Art Museum, the Museum of the National Center for Afro-American Artists, the Ontario Science Centre, the Peabody Essex Museum and the Boston Museum of Science (see www.danjayart.com). Currently, Dan is working with The Burroughs-Wellcome Fund to address the benefits, challenges and sustainability of an Art-Science Institute (see https://enfoldsciart.com/).
