Event Description

The United Nation resolution 41 C/61 proclaimed 7th day of July of each year as World Kiswahili Language Day, recognizing:

  • the role the Kiswahili language plays in promoting cultural diversity, creating awareness and fostering dialogue among civilizations and noted the need to promote multilingualism as a core value of the United Nations and an essential factor in harmonious communication between peoples, which promotes unity in diversity and international understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

At the University of Toronto, we have organized a Fall event to commemorate the day as the Swahili community. On the 13th of October, we will have a joint evening of celebration at William Doo Hall from 7-9pm.

Join us and talk about Kiswahili as a language (which is offered as a full unit course every year at African Studies Centre) and Swahili civilization including music, poems, and food.

The dress code for this event is African/Swahili wear. There will be a prize for the best-dressed attendee!

Karibuni!
