Event Description

Liberating land from ecocide: “An Island and One Night” (“Une Ile et une nuit”) Screening and Discussion

What does life feel like in zones liberated from ecocidal capitalism? How can one reclaim territory in a world tainted by settler-colonialism, fascism and other toxic forms of exclusion?

Join us for the Toronto Film Premiere of An Island and One Night (“Une Ile et une nuit”) which will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with activist/artist Kilian Jörg on Wednesday, October 9 from 6-8 PM at the William Doo Auditorium.

An Island and One Night (“Une Ile et une nuit”) is a fictional film made collectively over the past two years by the residents and users of the Quartier Libre des Lentillères, a self-organized area (ZED) on the last remaining market garden land in the city of Dijon. These eight hectares have been occupied and recultivated since 2010, resisting a  concrete “ecocity” project that still threatens them today. In the middle of the city, these fallow spaces and abandoned houses have been transformed into a self-managed, multi-purpose district, where collective housing, market gardening, self-construction, festive and cultural events, etc. intermingle. It’s a place of struggle and solidarity of all kinds, as well as a veritable reserve of biodiversity.

The film is an auto-fictional cinematic firework in a self-managed and collective manner, which makes the desire for radical-ecological change sensually comprehensible.

About Kilian Jörg

Kilian Jörg works both artistically and philosophically on the topic of ecological catastrophe and how its transformative forces can best be imagined and deployed. Previous publications have been on club culture, the political backlash from an ecological perspective, cultivating distance in catastrophic times and a speculative religion of waste. Their current research topics are the car as a metaphor for our toxic entanglements with modern lifestyles (released in book form as “Das Auto und die ökologische Katastrophe” in September 2024), the socio-psychological effects of living with ecocide and radical activist strategies of reclaiming land like the ZAD in France. They are working with the Futurama.Lab at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and are affiliated to the SFB Affective Societies at the FU Berlin.

The distribution of An Island and One Night will initially take the form of itinerant screenings – either free or on donation base, in keeping with this non-mercantile spirit. Beyond the pleasure of sharing this creation with a large and diverse audience, this tour is also an opportunity to pass on through encounters our experience of struggle, self-organization and the invention of forms of collective life geared towards a good life for all, and respectful of all living beings. www.piratesdeslentilleres.net/en
