Subsequent to a large donation in 2003 to fund the William Doo Auditorium at 45 Willcocks Street, William W. H. Doo (New ’68) has now pledged a further $1 million to support the renovation and enhancement of the auditorium. Construction will begin in 2018.
About our benefactor
In 1990, William W. H. Doo established Fung Seng Enterprises Holdings Limited, of which he is the chairman and major shareholder. The company is now a major property developer in Shanghai and one of Hong Kong’s leading service industry companies, with some 16,000 employees. Chairman and sole owner of the Four Seasons Hotel in Shanghai, Mr. Doo is also Governor of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong as well as Governor of the University of Toronto (Hong Kong) Foundation. His accolades include France’s Legion of Honour and appointment as Honorary Consul of Morocco in Hong Kong.
The William Doo Auditorium: past and future
Thanks to his loyalty to New College and his extraordinary generosity, we will be able to update the William Doo Auditorium, which since 2003 has been heavily used in a variety of ways. College signature events are always held there; many student groups use the space, as well as external clients; over the summer, the New College Summer Programs can frequently be found making use of the venue; and four times a year examinations are held within its walls.
Mr. Doo’s gift allows us to reimagine how the space can be configured, taking into account college-wide input from students, staff, faculty, programs and U of T infrastructure advisors. In addition to a substantial update to the audio-visual facilities, there are a number of aspects to be considered, such as including provision for a collaborative teaching environment and flexible reconfiguration options so that smaller events are not overwhelmed by the space. The possibilities have generated much excitement at the college and we are indebted to Mr. Doo for allowing this hub of the college a new lease on life.
Watch this space – we will be posting design sketches when the tendering process is complete!
And there’s more…
In addition to funds for the enhancement of the auditorium, Mr. Doo’s philanthropy also extends to a further $1 million to support the Cheng & William Doo Scholarship, adding to the existing Dr. Cheng Yu-tung Scholarships, and to establish William Doo Scholarships for international students from Hong Kong and mainland China, with preference being given to New College students.
New College and the University of Toronto are indeed privileged by Mr. Doo’s choice to invest in the future through education and are deeply honoured to be the beneficiaries of his largesse.
